Joe Ely, Ruthie Foster, and Paul Thorn

Joe Ely, Ruthie Foster, and Paul Thorn Song Swap - 3 Great artists, one fantastic evening!

Three distinctly different artists share the stage for an evening of song swapping. Joe Ely, a founding member of The Flatlanders (who played at the Lucas Theatre during SMF 2011) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist whose music touches on honky-tonk, Texas country, Tex-Mex and rock and roll. Those who have followed Ruthie Foster know that she can burn down any stage with her combustible blend of soul, blues, rock, folk and gospel. Ruthie's astonishing voice has taken her on an amazing ride, one that has included two SMF performances and house concerts over the past five years. Paul Thorn has been pleasing crowds for years with his muscular brand of roots music--bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern.

Ray Wylie Hubbard and Uncle Lucius

Outlaw player Ray Wylie Hubbard is best known for penning the Texas anthem 'Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother', made famous in a recording by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1973. While not indicative of Hubbard's true body of work, that tune thrust him into the spotlight in the progressive country genre and spurned the formation of the band The Cowboy Twinkies, one of the first cowpunk bands that blurred the lines between country and rock.

While this most recent appearance on the Crighton stage won't be a song swap, you can count on some stories from Hubbard between songs anyway. Ray Waylie Hubbard currently has a book in production and he is due to release a new album April 7, The Ruffian's Misfortune.

Like the city that brought them together, Uncle Lucius is a gumbo, with hints of Americana and folk juxtaposed with a slow-cooked roux that is steeped in classic rock 'n' roll and the blues. The resulting flavor is familiar and unique, roots at its most refined, albeit with a gutbucket foundation.

After 8 years of touring across Texas and to both coasts and back, the band was named 2014's Best New Band by the Texas Regional Radio Report. Their most recent release, Live @ Grady's 66 Pub, is available for free download at They are currently in preproduction for their next studio recording with George Reiff (Ray Wylie Hubbard, Shinyribs, Band of Heathens), with the album to be released in early 2015.

Ray Wylie Hubbard and Uncle Lucius come to the Crighton Theatre on June 6th!

BJ Thomas

A true American institution whose iconic pop, country and gospel hits defined their respective generations and now transcend them, B.J. Thomas has found a unique way to celebrate an incredible half a century in music and some 47 years since his first gold selling hit on Scepter Records. The singer, a five time Grammy and two time Dove Award winner who has sold more than 70 million records and is ranked in Billboard's Top 50 most played artists over the past 50 years.

Many of Thomas' signature hits (from "Raindrops" to "Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" and "Lonesome") find him seeking some level of positivity to overcome the proverbial universal battle with loneliness. He extended this theme into his successful late 70s-early 80s foray into gospel music, which earned him the first four platinum albums in the genre's history: Home Where I Belong, Happy Man, You Gave Me Love and Amazing Grace.

See BJ Thomas at the Crighton Theatre on June 20th!
